An Experiment upon a Bird in the Airpump

As part of BBC4’s ‘Century that made us’ season, Benjamin Woolley examined at how this painting captured the mood of adventure, but also fear at a turning point in history.

Earlier television work includes contributing to the BBC’s arts magazine The Late Show, for which he wrote and presented items on subjects ranging from the End of the Space Age through the philosophy of Michel Foucault to the architecture of Tokyo.  The latter won him the 1991 UK Arts Journalist of the Year award.  He has also contributed to a range of other programmes for the BBC, including an edition of the literary series Bookmark about Aldous Huxley, a survey of Singapore for a series on Cities of the Future, and a travelogue about Disney’s new town in Florida, Celebration for the arts strand The Works.  In 1998 he won an Emmy for the commentary for the Discovery series Three Minutes to Impact.
